School and Adolescent Health
The School and Adolescent Health services section promotes comprehensive health and wellness for Ohio children and adolescents by providing trainings, resources, research data and technical assistance to those working with Ohio youth.
Program Areas
School Nursing Consultation provides:
- Regularly scheduled Nursing Education for nurses who work in schools
- Data collection, survey reports and resource documents to be used for clinical school health services
School Nutrition Education and Training provides:
- BMI surveillance
- Reports
- Guidelines for proper weighing and measuring of school aged children
- Healthy Ohio Buckeye Best Healthy School Awards Program (see below)
Adolescent Health provides:
- Bi-annual Ohio Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Reports related to the health status of youth
- Support for various adolescent health issues
The Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Health. Funding for this initiative supports technical assistance to promote health and wellness programs and policy development for Ohio Schools. The goal of the CSHP is to improve the health and academic success of Ohio’s children and youth.

Buckeye Best Schools Award
Healthy Students make better learners! The Buckeye Best Healthy Schools Awards recognize schools that demonstrate a commitment to the health and wellness of their students and staff through the establishment of programs and policies that foster such goals. These include improving nutrition, increasing physical activity and stopping or preventing the use of tobacco.
NOTE: Due to programmatic changes the Healthy Ohio Buckeye Best School Awards Program will be suspended until further notice.
