Disease Prevention
Healthy Ohio is working to enhance and integrate the Ohio Department of Health’s cancer, diabetes, heart & stroke, arthritis, injury, sexual assault and tobacco-use prevention programs to maximize their impact and efficiency. As a first step in this process, current programs will be inventoried to identify gaps in coverage and promising practices and to assist in establishing priorities for future programming or funding. The ultimate goal of these efforts is a decrease in Ohio’s chronic disease rates.
Birth Defects Prevention Awareness
The Ohio Connections for Children with Special Needs (OCCSN), Ohio’s birth defects program, calls attention to women’s health and fitness during Birth Defects Prevention Month. “Obesity Prevention and Weight Management—Before, During and After Pregnancy” is the theme of National Birth Defects Prevention Network (Network) during January 2009. It is important to share the message that a mother’s health before, during and after pregnancy is an important foundation to having a healthy baby. Obesity has been identified as a leading public health concern in the United States. Obesity can be associated with birth defects such as heart, neural tube and limb defects in addition to an increased risk of pregnancy complications.
The 2009 Birth Defects Prevention Toolkit provides helpful tools and resources to assist health care professionals, providers and staff with educational outreach and prevention activities that they can conduct in their communities during Birth Defects Prevention Month and throughout the year. OCCSN, authorized by Ohio Revised Code 3705.30, has three purposes: 1) collect data on children from birth to 5 years of age with birth defects for research and statistical purposes; 2) ensure families are informed of programs to improve their child’s health outcomes; and 3) educate health professionals and the public about birth defects and how women can reduce their risk of having a baby with a birth defect.
