The Burden of Injury from Unintentional Falls in Ohio

Falls represent a serious threat to public health and safety. They are the leading cause of nonfatal, medically treated injury in Ohio for all age groups. The Ohio Department of Health, Violence and Injury Prevention Program (VIPP) has released a report, The Burden of Injury from Unintentional Falls in Ohio, 2002-2005. This report provides much-needed information about the impact of fatal and medically treated falls in Ohio. Data were obtained from several sources, most notably Ohio death certificates and the Ohio Hospital Association’s (OHA's)hospital inpatient discharge (HID) and emergency room (ER) datasets, compiled from all OHA member hospitals.

The report provides detailed information on the overwhelming costs and consequences of falls, with particular attention to the burden of falls among older Ohioans. Falls are particularly harmful to older adults; the likelihood of falling and consequences of a fall increase dramatically with age. Please see the full report for important information, including prevention resources, about this pressing public health issue.
