Healthy Ohio Forum on Childhood Obesity Prevention
On September 19, 2008, the Office of Healthy Ohio sponsored a Forum on Childhood Obesity Prevention at the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts in Columbus. More than 300 state, community and business leaders from around the state with interests in health, nutrition, physical activity/recreation, education, transportation and urban planning came together to:
- Learn about current research and initiatives,
- Share information about promising best practices and local projects and
- Identify ways to ensure today’s children have a chance to live long, healthy lives.
During the forum, First Lady Strickland announced a directive from Governor Ted Strickland for the Office of Healthy Ohio to develop the Ohio Obesity Prevention Plan. Other speakers included Cincinnati resident and Olympic gold medalist Mary Wineberg of the U.S. women’s 4-X-400 meter relay team; Ohio First Lady Frances Strickland; Ohio Department of Health Director Alvin D. Jackson, M.D.; Office of Healthy Ohio Director Cynthia Burnell; Nationwide CEO and Vice Chairman Jerry Jurgensen; and Director of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention William Dietz, M.D.
Speaker presentations are available on the Healthy Ohio Web site. Following the forum, participants were given an opportunity to provide information on obesity prevention initiatives at the state, county and local levels. An interactive map displays these activities by setting—school, community, health care and worksite. An accompanying chart provides information on the type of activity, highlights of the activity and who to contact for further information.
