Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Program
Program Vision
Ohio will be a state free of tobacco use
The Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Program (TUPCP) is dedicated to reducing the prevalence of tobacco use in Ohio and the associated health effects. Funding for the TUPCP comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Office on Smoking and Health.
Core program goals include:
- Prevent youth tobacco-use initiation.
- Promote cessation of tobacco use.
- Eliminate secondhand smoke exposure for all Ohioans.
- Eliminate disparities among populations affected by tobacco use.
The Ohio Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Program sustains community interventions, counter marketing programs, policy, systems and environmental change tactics and surveillance and evaluation operations to coordinate or maintain the following activities:
- Respond to inquiries from the public, elected officials and others.
- Provide model tobacco-free policies for schools, public places and worksites.
- Plan and implement training opportunities for tobacco control advocates and public health workers on specific tobacco control topics such as worksite policies, media and policy advocacy and the latest in cessation methods.
- Continuous monitoring of tobacco prevalence among Ohioans. Annual adult tobacco prevalence rates are assessed through the Adult Tobacco Survey and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System while youth tobacco prevalence rates are monitored biannually by way of the Ohio Youth Tobacco Survey. Results of these reports are found within the pages of this Web site.
- Provide funds for local grants.
- Provide assistance with quitting tobacco use through 1-800-Quit-NOW (1-800-784-8669).
- The Ohio Tobacco Quit Line provides free counseling to Medicaid recipients, uninsured, pregnant women and members of the tobacco collaborative and nicotine replacement therapy to qualified callers.
In 2006, Ohio voters passed the Smoke Free Ohio Workplace Act. The TUPCP actively assists Ohioans with information about the clean indoor air act. For questions concerning Smoke-Free Ohio, call 1-866-634-7654. To report a violation of Ohio’s clean indoor air act, call 1-866-559-6446.
